The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ruled that Poland has influence on what happens in Brussels, for example in the field of defense or aid to Ukraine. But we must not forget that Europe does not consist only of Poland, said Radosław Sikorski in an interview for the weekly magazine “Polityka”. And where is the ambitious diplomacy of Donald Tusk’s government?
Sikorski ruled that as a country we have influence on what happens in Brussels “based on our weight, population and the state of the economy.”
And success is when, thanks to our fitness, we can play in a higher weight category
– added.
What kind of EU does Sikorski dream of?
When asked what the future Union should look like according to Radosław Sikorski, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs replied:
I would like closer integration in areas where Poles and other Europeans demand it.
He mentioned public health as an example.
The pandemic came and we almost took a hit when it came to masks, ventilators and vaccines. However, the European Commission said it was not really a matter of health, but of the internal market and the free movement of goods. And countries cannot ban the export of masks to another member state. It also turned out that Europeans want us to have our own stock of medicines, because we are too dependent on external suppliers. They also expect minimum standards, for example in the treatment of cancer. This could be a new area of integration
– said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He added that Europhobes do not understand that EU standards – for example veterinary regulations – are a convenience to business and not a hindrance.
With 27 national standards, the same product would have to be adapted in 27 different ways to sell anything across the EU
– added.
“The EU with an income of 15 trillion euros cannot be defenseless.
He also stated that, in light of research and in light of the war in Ukraine, Europeans need deeper integration in defense policy.
Because they fear both Vladimir Putin and the outcome of the November elections in the United States. In my opinion, they rightly believe that the European Union, with an income of EUR 15 trillion, should not be defenseless
– he pointed out.
He made it clear that the US does not want to get involved in every problem that arises at our borders.
They have a problem at the southern border and we have a problem at the southern border. But they don’t ask us to help them. And when we tried to intervene in Libya in 2011, it turned out that without American reconnaissance and American Tomahawks we could do nothing. We must face such challenges in our immediate environment ourselves
– said Sikorski.
Is Polish diplomacy otherwise ambitious? After all, the politicians of Donald Tusk and KO argued that thanks to them we would “return” to the mainstream, that the opinion of Poland would be taken into account in Brussels… So why this sudden minimalism in Minister Radosław Sikorski’s approach?
