WSJ writes that French President Emmanuel Macron held secret talks with US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in February to lay the groundwork for the Paris summit, and that he hoped this would influence the West’s strategy in the conflict in Ukraine.

According to their sources, the French leader told them that they “must adopt a position of strategic uncertainty against Russia that would leave all military options on the table.”

“Macron wanted to stop broadcasting the limits of Western intervention – the so-called red lines – and instead keep the Kremlin guessing,” the newspaper notes.

Unnamed officials told the publication that Biden questioned the need for a change in strategy due to concerns that it could lead to escalation of tensions, and that Scholz did not support Macron because his opinion could divide allies and draw NATO countries to the side of the conflict.
