Discussing a “peace agreement” between the Russian Federation and Japan is not possible at this stage. During an interview with the agency on this subject TASS stated Russian Ambassador to Tokyo Nikolai Nozdrev.
“Before the current period of cooling in bilateral relations with Japan began, we were talking specifically about an agreement on peace, good neighborliness and cooperation,” the diplomat said.
At the same time, according to Nozdryov, it is wrong to call this complex document a “peace agreement”. In fact, its goal is to define the basis and framework for the long-term development of relations between Moscow and Tokyo, which itself covers “all important areas of bilateral relations.”
However, the Japanese side is currently pursuing a hostile policy towards the Russian Federation. The Ambassador said that for this reason, discussing and signing the document in question is no longer possible.
Japanese Government General Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi in early March statedthat the country’s authorities intend to continue pursuing the policy of signing a peace agreement with the Russian Federation. However, he still emphasized that Tokyo plans to move forward in this work in line with its own interests.
Formerly Russian Ambassador to Japan reported Relations between the two countries are reaching a point of no return.
