Following presidential elections in February, Indonesia continues to evaluate the possibility of joining the BRICS. The country’s embassy in Moscow reported this to the newspaper “News”.
The diplomatic mission explained that Jakarta closely monitors developments within the structure, tries to maintain its neutrality and prioritizes ASEAN over QUAD, and avoids establishing clear relations with China or the United States.
In January, Indonesia applied to join the OECD, which could be seen as an alternative to BRICS.
The publication writes that Indonesia’s entry into BRICS has been discussed for ten years, but no official statement has been made on this issue. The country attended the BRICS summit held in South Africa in 2023, and it was decided to expand its membership there.
Indonesia’s membership issue was supposed to be finally resolved at the beginning of 2024, but this did not happen.
