The head of the National Security Agency, Jacek Siewiera, believes that a debate on compulsory military service should start in Poland. However, he noted that “running around the training ground with a gun” is a much smaller part of the Army’s current needs. According to Siewiera, it would be more about ‘mandatory civil, public services’.
The head of the National Security Agency noted that in Western countries the issue of conscription or national service is currently being discussed much more widely and intensively than in Poland.
I don’t quite understand why this debate is so difficult for us
– said Siewiera on the YouTube channel This is IT.
This probably stems from the vision of the military we once had, following the Soviet model: violent, with human rights violations, with discipline that did not serve order, and the implementation of violent practices, such as the wave movement.
– he assessed.
According to him, today’s army is a place where you can realize your different ambitions: professional, scientific, personal.
The areas of logistics, planning, deployment of advanced weapons, cyber and cognitive warfare are areas far from the front line.
– Siewiera emphasized the different service options.
According to Siewiera, “running with a gun” makes up a much smaller portion of the military’s needs today. In the current circumstances, he pointed out, those who make contact in battle are usually soldiers of the Special Forces, where they must be prepared to serve.
According to the head of the National Security Bureau, the debate about conscription should be broad in nature, just as the service should be broad in character.
Not compulsory military service, but compulsory civilian service. The way certain work is offered and certain tasks are performed with the understanding that citizenship is not just about taking money, participating in the labor market and, in the event of war, leaving
– he pointed out.
Departure of the conscripts
In response to questions from internet users, Siewiera said that – in the event of war – the departure of military-age men “would be difficult.” However, he added that he could not imagine the services looking for draft evaders across Europe.
The head of the National Security Bureau also spoke, among other things, that there is a place in the army for people with different sexual preferences.
As for people with preferences other than heterosexual: there is of course a place for such people in the military and absolutely no one should question or impose conditions on military service or a position in the service based on sexual preferences.
– emphasized the head of the National Security Bureau.
In 2009, military service was suspended due to the transition to a professional army.
