The changes to the Green Deal in the field of agriculture proposed by the European Commission and accepted by the EU Council are for the benefit of farmers, Czesław Siekierski, head of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Poland, told journalists in Brussels.
Changes in the Green Deal follow farmers’ expectations. This is what the protesting farmers were asking for. Representatives of EU member states in the Special Committee on Agriculture on Tuesday approved changes to some basic legal acts of the common agricultural policy (CAP), proposed by the European Commission in response to farmers’ protests.
This review covers the implementation of the CAP strategic plans and aims to simplify, reduce administrative burdens and provide more flexibility to meet certain environmental conditions.
The Special Committee for Agriculture has approved, among other things, changes to the so-called Good Agricultural and Environmental Protection Practices (GAEC) proposed by the EC. When paying out subsidies to farmers, compliance with these standards is taken into account.
One of the most important changes is the introduction of a general provision that allows Member States to grant temporary and targeted derogations from certain conditionality requirements in case of unforeseen climatic conditions that prevent farmers from meeting these requirements. Member States will have to inform the EC about such deviations once a year.
