The bill on the recognition of the Silesian language as a regional language has already passed the first reading in the Sejm and has been forwarded to the committee. “It is a great success that should be celebrated,” says Monika Rosa of KO. She appealed to President Andrzej Duda to sign the bill once it is passed. “However, I am convinced that after the next presidential elections there will no longer be such problems,” Rosa emphasized. Thanks to Donald Tusk’s coalition, the Silesian Autonomy Movement’s long-standing efforts to recognize Silesians as an ethnic minority now have strong support in the government.
Recognizing the Silesian language as a regional language is one of the hundred special features of Tusk during the hundred days of his rule. He personally submitted a statement on this matter in Radzionków on March 19, 2023.
We will finish what the people here have started without success
– Tusk said during the election campaign. The idea is supported by coalition partners Tusk, Third Road and Links. Recognizing the Silesian language as a regional language is the first step towards Silesian separatism. A month ago, New Left MEP Łukasz Kohut announced that a draft law on the recognition of Silesians as an ethnic minority would be submitted to the Sejm in 2024.

Separatist concrete
After the first reading, members of the ruling coalition submitted a bill to the Committee on National and Ethnic Minorities on the recognition of the Silesian language as a regional language. Law and Justice and Confederation MPs expressed strong opposition. KO MP Monika Rosa told PAP that she, together with other parliamentarians, will call on President Andrzej Duda to sign the law recognizing the Silesian language as a regional language. After Wednesday’s debate, the Sejm referred the bill for further consideration in committee.
We have succeeded in carrying out the first reading. Previously the project had to go its own way, so it took a while, but it was referred to the committee. This is a great success that should be celebrated
– said Monika Rosa. According to her, the committee should discuss the bill at the next session of the Sejm, scheduled for April 10-12, 2024, and immediately send it to second and third reading. The Civic Coalition, Third Road and Links declared their support for the project.
There is still one president left
If parliament approves the bill, it must still be signed by President Andrzej Duda, whose circles in parliament are against the recognition of the Silesian language as a regional language.
I don’t know what the president will do and I don’t want to predict. We will certainly call on Andrzej Duda to sign the law recognizing the Silesian language as a regional language. If he decides otherwise, we will try to override the veto. However, I am convinced that such problems will not arise again after the next presidential elections
– said MP Rosa.
During yesterday’s debate in the Sejm, MPs from PiS and the Confederation cited the opinions of linguists, as well as an interview with Prof. Jan Miodek from several years ago, in which he ruled that there is no Silesian language, only a dialect of Polish. There were statements that the whole initiative was related to his recognition it is inspired by the Germans and could pose a threat to Poland.

This would mean, among other things: possibility of introducing voluntary Silesian language lessons in schools and installing bilingual signs with the names of cities, where more than 20 percent declare that they use the Silesian language. residents, co-financing activities related to the preservation of the Silesian language or introducing two representatives of people who speak Silesian to the Joint Commission of the Government and National and Ethnic Minorities.
