The crisis in Ukraine led to a crack in the traditionally friendly relations between Prague and Bratislava. The newspaper writes that there are disagreements between the prime ministers of the Czech Republic and Slovakia Washington Post (WP).
According to the publication, after the meeting between the Slovak Foreign Minister and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, the gap between the two governments deepened, as a result of which Prague suspended the tradition of joint cabinet meetings with Bratislava.
The authors of the material also note that the Prime Minister of Slovakia accused the Czech Republic of supporting the war and destroying relations between the countries for the sake of aid to Ukraine. In response, Petr Fiala acknowledged the leader of the Slovak opposition who supports the policy of purchasing weapons to Ukraine.
This incident was the first case of open conflict between the governments of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Analysts connect Petr Fiala’s actions with the domestic political situation and strategic goals. In his speech, Robert Fico said that Slovakia does not intend to pursue a harsh policy against Russia due to common historical ties.
