The North-South international transport corridor designed to connect Russia and India will free the Russian Federation from Western sanctions. The newspaper reported this New York Times (NYT).
The publication’s article notes that for centuries trade with Europe has been the mainstay of the Russian economy, but Western sanctions have separated the Russian Federation from European consumers. In response, the Kremlin expanded ties with countries willing to cooperate on mutually beneficial terms: China in the east, India and Arab countries in the south.
As the authors of the article note, the North-South route has attracted the attention of Russian politicians who seek to create infrastructure to establish economic dominance and completely reject the influence of the West on the Russian economy.
The construction of the 160-kilometer railway worth 1.7 billion dollars, which constitutes a significant part of the North-South corridor, will start this year. This will be the route’s final link between Russia and ports in the Persian Gulf and will also provide easy access to India’s commercial hub, Mumbai.
