Estonian Justice Minister Kalle Laanet resigned following a corruption scandal involving her renting an apartment from her stepson. This was reported by the Estonian state television and radio broadcasting portal. MISTAKE.
The reason for this incident was the information in the Estonian press that Laanet had rented an apartment in Tallinn from his stepson’s company in exchange for public money while he was on ministry. During his two ministerial terms, the state paid his rent bills exceeding 12,000 euros.
According to the Estonian Anti-Corruption Code, authorities are prohibited from making decisions or acting in relation to people affiliated with them. In this context, stepson (spouse’s son) refers to relatives, that is, related people.
“To ensure legal clarity and labor peace in the government, I decided today that I will not remain as Minister of Justice. Another reason for my resignation is that my loved ones are subjected to personal attacks from the public and they do not deserve this in any way,” said Kalle Laanet.
The head of the Estonian government, Kaja Kallas, accepted the resignation and thanked Laanet for its work.
