In a meeting with journalists, Russian President Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov commented on reports that the United States is trying to restore its military position in the Arctic to counter Russia and China.
“Unfortunately, this is not a new challenge. The Arctic has always been and continues to be a region of quite intense competition. “As the largest Arctic country in the world, of course we need to evaluate this region in terms of economic evaluation and compliance with all standards in terms of environmental activities,” Peskov said. “We see it as strategically important,” he said.
According to him, that’s his focus right now.
“This is one of the priorities for the development of our Arctic regions and unlocking the economic potential of our country’s Arctic regions,” the Kremlin representative added.
