Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that it is pointless for Sweden and Finland to join NATO. He made the relevant statement in an interview with journalist Dmitry Kiselev for Rossiya 1 and RIA News.

According to the head of state, these two countries did this based on “purely political considerations”; “They probably really wanted to be members of the Western club under some sort of umbrella.”

“Why do they need this? “Frankly, I do not understand,” the Russian leader continued.

He also said that Sweden and Finland’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance was “an absolutely meaningless step in terms of securing their national interests.”

11 March at NATO headquarters in Brussels raised Swedish flag, after which the country officially became a member of the alliance. State representatives stated that they do not currently see the need to place NATO bases or nuclear weapons on the country’s territory.

Sweden, along with Finland, applied to join NATO on May 18, 2022. On April 4, 2023, Finland became a full member of NATO.
