The government of Donald Tusk considers the issue of reparations closed, but wants a clear signal from Berlin that Germany is aware of its historical responsibility – writes the ‘Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’.
“Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung writes that German awareness of the crimes they have committed against Poland is low. As an example, the German daily mentions the massacre of the inhabitants of Wola during the Warsaw Uprising.
In Poland, on the other hand, this lack of knowledge is very clearly noticed. It reflects the widespread feeling that even 80 years after the end of the Second World War, most Germans are unaware of the full extent of the atrocities committed by the German occupying forces in Poland.

During his visit to Berlin in February this year, Tusk stated that he would not continue formal efforts for reparations. He concluded that the case was legally closed.
According to the German daily, Tusk’s position “finds great support in Poland among renowned scientists.”
Politically, however, such a position is not without risk
– we read in “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.
This would probably not stop PiS from making accusations against the government and Germany, but they would be less convincing. The Polish government’s expectations regarding Berlin not only have political and tactical grounds, but are also of a fundamental nature. (…) Even Poland, which has always been against PiS’s reparation demands, sees shortcomings on the German side
– emphasized the author of the article, Reinhard Veser, who believes that PiS has stirred up anti-German sentiments. Poles are still aware that Germany wanted to destroy Poland, not just occupy it like the Western countries.
