Deputy Chairman of the Sejm and co-chairman of the New Left, Włodzimierz Czarzasty, said that the Confederation together with the Third Way blocked his request to the Sejm Presidium to proceed with draft laws on abortion during the current session of the Sejm.
Earlier in the day, the Marshal of the Sejm, Szymon Hołownia, announced on TVN24 that he had decided to go ahead with abortion laws in the Sejm on April 11, just after the first round of local government elections. He then said that he would submit such a recommendation regarding the date to the Presidium of the Sejm and the Seniors’ Convention. Hołownia emphasized that he did everything he could to ensure that the Sejm took these projects seriously.
However, we live in a political reality and not an ideal one; we are in the middle of a very hot election campaign
– he noted.
This decision infuriated left-wing politicians, who accused Hołownia of using the so-called parliamentary freezer. But it didn’t stop there, as the co-chair of the Left launched a frontal attack, blaming… the Third Way and the Confederation.

Tzarzasty accuses the Third Way and the Confederacy
After the evening meeting of the Sejm Presidium, Włodzimierz Czarzasty, Deputy Speaker of the House and co-chair of the New Left, announced that he had asked the Presidium to proceed with draft laws on abortion during the current session of the Sejm. March 6-8).
As he noted, three people were in favor of the motion: himself and two deputy marshals of PO: Dorota Niedziela and Monika Wielichowska, while the Marshal of the Sejm, leader of Poland in 2050 Szymon Hołownia, and deputy marshals Piotr Zgorzelski (PSL) and Krzysztof Bosak (Confederation) was against.
Czarzasty noted that due to the fact that the Sejm Speaker’s vote is counted twice, his motion was not adopted in the vote.
I am surprised that this issue was blocked with the votes of the Confederation and the Third Way, well, such a coalition I did not expect
– he said.
The deputy marshal said he still believed that women’s rights were not a matter of worldview or ideology.
As a left-wing party, we are extremely consistent on this issue
– he pointed out. At the same time, he emphasized that this issue would not endanger the functioning of the ruling coalition.

Hołownia responds
Later asked about Tzarzasty’s statement, Hołownia emphasized that he “did absolutely everything to increase the chances that this Sejm will actually change the situation of women in Poland.”
This is my goal
– he assured. He also reiterated that “we are in a very specific political situation” and “in the middle of a campaign that is very hot.”
I believe that today there is a huge risk, not that the Third Way projects will be rejected, but that the left projects will be rejected in the first reading, together with the KO projects and perhaps also with the Third Way- projects.
– said Hołownia.
He added that it is his job as chairman of the Sejm to minimize this risk. He assured that April 11 “is the deadline by which these projects will be considered.”
Abortion projects
Last November, the left submitted two bills to liberalize abortion regulations. One of them partially decriminalizes abortion and its assistance, the other allows termination of pregnancy until the end of the twelfth week of its duration.
End of January this year. A project by a group of MPs from the Civic Coalition parliamentary club was submitted to the Sejm. It is assumed that a pregnant person is entitled to health care in the form of termination of pregnancy during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy.
In addition to these projects, Trzecia Droga (PSL and Polska 2050) submitted a bill to the Sejm at the end of February that reverses the Constitutional Court’s 2020 ruling on abortion regulations. TD politicians also announced a proposal for a referendum on this issue.
Anti-abortion rules in force in Poland since 1993 were amended following the October 2020 Constitutional Court ruling. Previously, the Law on Family Planning, Protection of the Human Fetus and Conditions for the Permissibility of Termination of Pregnancy, known as the Abortion Compromise , also allowed abortion in the case of severe and irreversible fetal impairment or an incurable disease threatening his life. The Constitutional Court ruled that this ground for termination of pregnancy was unconstitutional.
