We proposed an embargo and 12 agricultural laws, but the current government has done nothing, Law and Justice MP Robert Telus said on television in Poland. As he emphasized, “farmers are demanding specific actions” and the current Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is only conducting talks. “We want to see some action, but there is no action,” the former head of the ministry added.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Czesław Siekierski, took part in the meeting of EU Agriculture Ministers in Brussels on Monday. In the background there were protests by European farmers who used tractors to bypass police barricades and set tires on fire. The police used water cannons and tear gas against them. Demonstrations are taking place in many member states of the European Union.
Green deal
Farmers are against new EU regulations, including low prices for their products, high production costs and restrictions on nitrogen emissions in agriculture.
First we need to define and explain what the Green Deal is (…). There are certain elements of the Green Deal that Poland has long been implementing: shortening the route ‘from farm to fork’. This is the part of the Green Deal that is being introduced in Poland in agricultural retail or in a local company. Farmers in Europe and Poland are certainly against the restrictions that the EU wants to introduce
– said MP Telus on Telewizja wPoland.
The EU is introducing the European Green Deal to implement ecological transformation and, as a result, achieve climate neutrality by 2050. However, the package of policy initiatives that has been prepared covers several areas, such as industry, transport, energy, environment, climate and agriculture.
Reducing CO2 emissions
As the PiS politician noted, the problem is mainly the issue of CO2 emissions, and Donald Tusk’s people want a 90% reduction.
This is the demand of the current government. This is not folding agriculture, it is killing agriculture. Recently the Minister of Climate went to Brussels and said: “We are reducing CO2 emissions by 90 percent.” This is killer.
Deputy Climate Minister Urszula Zielińska (KO) unveiled a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% in Brussels in mid-January. by 2040
The PiS MP recalled that farmers are also against setting aside agricultural land and limiting some of the agricultural overproduction. He added that food safety is at risk.
According to Telus, “the current government is doing nothing” to improve the situation of farmers.
For 70 days he has not introduced any solution that could help in this matter
– he noted.
Embargo on products from Ukraine
The former Minister of Agriculture also referred to the issue of the farmers’ strike at the Polish-Ukrainian border due to the transportation of low-quality Ukrainian products. Ukrainians are not bound by the same rules as farmers in the EU, because, among other things, they use pesticides that have been banned in the Member States for years.
On April 15, 2023, we introduced a ban on the import of products (from outside the EU) to Poland. Later this changed to four grains and grain products. We gave farmers subsidies for everything: fertilizer, grain, to help them survive this difficult period
– recalled the PiS MP.
No action from Tusk’s government
We proposed an embargo and 12 farm laws, but the current government has done nothing
– added.
We were accused of wanting to take Poland out of the EU because we had introduced a ban against the EU. We were not afraid of the EU, and they are still afraid of the EU today
– said Telus on Telewizja in Poland. According to him, Tusk’s government wants to “spread this protest” because it is only holding talks and there are no visible results.
Farmers demand specific actions. We want to see some action, there is no action
– he pointed out.
