The chances of Europe or the USA imposing sanctions on Rosatom are close to zero. In a conversation we had on Radio 1 about this topic said Oleg Muratov, Member of the Central Board of the Russian Nuclear Association.

According to him, Rosatom is one of the main suppliers of nuclear fuel to the USA and European countries. He announced that nuclear and research reactors also run on Russian fuel. Russia is also a major producer of isotopes used in nuclear medicine.

“Approximately 20 percent of electricity in the United States is produced by nuclear power plants. And about a quarter of these stations run on Russian fuel. Stations in EU countries also operate with our fuel. The Armenian station also operates with our domestic fuel. The energy engineer stated that Ukraine had reserves of Russian fuel, but refused to buy it and switched to American fuel, but the problem has not been fully resolved yet.

Assuming that sanctions are imposed, this will affect both Rosatom and buyers of Russian fuel from abroad. Muratov noted that in this context, Western countries may face a nuclear fuel shortage.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi previously expressed He believes that reducing Europe’s dependence on the Russian nuclear industry will require significant costs and does not think it is possible to suddenly give up Russian resources.

It was known before take part IAEA chief’s visit to Moscow.
