Egyptian authorities have begun building a wall near Rafah in southern Gaza. The newspaper reported this New York Times with reference to satellite images and construction participants.
According to the publication, satellite photos show bulldozers clearing a large area of land in the buffer zone between the Rafah border gate south of the border gate. Analysis of the images showed that the work began around February 5.
The contractor and engineer involved in the construction told the reporter that the Egyptian army instructed them to build a 5-meter-high concrete wall to cover an area of 5 square kilometers.
At the same time, the authors of the publication noted that it is not yet known whether this structure is intended to cover Gazans crossing the border.
An Egyptian government spokesman declined to comment and referred to officials’ statements about the need to strengthen the border.
