Head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell, in his speech after the meetings with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in Brussels, criticized Azerbaijan’s “disproportionate reaction” to the bombardment of the Armenian army. This was reported by RIA News.
“We discussed the normalization process of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, including, unfortunately, the recent incident at the borders,” Borrell said.
It was noted that the bombing of Azerbaijani soldiers was regrettable, but the reaction “seemed disproportionate” because Baku ignored the Armenian Ministry of Defense’s statement that the incident would be investigated.
Before that, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan statedIt was stated that the country’s Ministry of Defense instructed the troops not to escalate tensions on the Azerbaijani border and not to succumb to provocations.
Armenia accused Azerbaijan is under fire at the border. Baku described the incident as a “retaliatory operation” in response to an attack by Armenian armed forces on 12 February in which an Azerbaijani border guard was injured; Yerevan later promised to launch an investigation and punish the perpetrators.
