Cameron Ortiz, former head of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police intelligence unit, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for revealing state secrets. This was reported by Guard.
After the jury found Ortiz guilty, the judge imposed an “adequate and just sentence,” according to the transcript. Ortiz himself also pleaded not guilty, according to material documents.
“Crown prosecutors, seeking a 28-year prison sentence, said Ortiz ‘put the safety of Canadians at risk,'” the text reads. The statement is included.

Ortiz pleaded not guilty to charges including violating the Privacy Act when he disclosed classified information in 2015 and later tried to do so again.
In his defense, Ortiz said he forwarded the classified material to promote the use of an online encryption service that would transmit information to allied spy agencies. He also told jurors that he was working to protect the country from an undisclosed “serious threat” and that his life had been “destroyed” since his arrest.
