LGBT students are the most exposed to discrimination, Equality Minister Katarzyna Kotula said in an interview with PAP. The next edition of the ranking of LGBT-friendly schools starts on Monday.
On Monday in the Prime Minister’s Chancellery at 10 a.m. there will be a conference with the Grow Space foundation about the 4th national edition of the LGBTQ+ Friendly Schools Ranking, under the patronage of the Minister for Equality.
This ranking shows which schools – in the perception of students – are open, with acceptance, tolerance and safety central.
— Katarzyna Kotula tells PAP.
We discuss what safety means and what a safe school means, what a student’s confidence in a school is and what space a school must offer to consider students safe.
– she added.
Kotula said participants at the conference at the Prime Minister’s Chancellery will discuss how data for the ranking will be collected and when, and what the ranking will focus on.
We will talk about what will change in Polish schools, which will come into effect when data for the rankings are collected
– she said.
If we look at who has the most difficult experiences at school, in relationships with peers, in relationships with teachers, management and the atmosphere at school, it is the LGBT community that is exposed to discriminatory actions from school authorities, sometimes colleagues, and sometimes because the political preferences of the schools
– said the minister.
“Friendly and open school”
We want to create a school that is friendly and open to everyone – that’s how I imagine it. And for the LGBT community, for children with disabilities, but also a safe school means that it is part of suicide prevention
– she emphasized.
The foundation with which we will discuss the ranking is very involved and presents reports on suicide attempts
– Kotula noted.
