The Confederation is absolutely against facilitating access to the so-called morning-after pills and will vote against this project. The same applies to two projects related to the liberalization of access to abortion, Confederation spokeswoman Ewa Zajączkowska-Hernik said in the PAP Studio.
The day before yesterday, the Sejm received a draft amendment from the government to the Pharmaceutical Law regarding access to emergency contraception, i.e. the so-called the morning-after pill, which has been available only by prescription since July 2017.
Morning after pill
The proposed changes provide for the availability of the tablet for people aged 15 and over.
Zajączkowska said in the PAP Studio that the Confederation is “absolutely against this kind of solutions”.
This poses a very high risk for young women, we cannot imagine that (the pill) would not be available without a prescription
– she added, noting that the Confederation Club would vote against.
A 15-year-old girl may not be fully aware of the consequences of taking the morning-after pill. Apart from the ideological aspects (…), the characteristics of the drug show many actions and side effects of taking such tablets
– said Zajączkowska-Hernik.

Against abortion
The Confederation spokeswoman was also asked about two abortion laws that will soon be discussed in the Sejm (projects of the Left and the Citizens’ Coalition) that provide for the liberalization of abortion laws up to the twelfth week of pregnancy.
The Confederation supports the protection of life from the moment of conception and, on the other hand, opposes the use of abortion as a form of contraception. And these two projects reduce abortion to a form of contraception that is fully available. We are absolutely against it
– she stated.
Zajączkowska-Hernik announced that her club would vote against both projects.
Anti-abortion rules in force in Poland since 1993 were amended following the October 2020 Constitutional Court ruling. Previously, the Law on Family Planning, Protection of the Human Fetus and Conditions for the Permissibility of Termination of Pregnancy, known as the Abortion Compromise , also allowed abortion in the case of severe and irreversible fetal impairment or an incurable disease threatening his life. The Constitutional Tribunal ruled that this ground for termination of pregnancy was unconstitutional, sparking a wave of protests across the country. This provision expired with the publication of the Constitutional Court ruling in January 2021.
