Japan’s attitude towards resolving the issue of ownership of the Kuril Islands and concluding a peace treaty with Russia has not changed, but an agreement is now unlikely to be reached. Japanese Government General Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stated this at a press conference in Tokyo. RIA News.

According to him, relations between the Russian Federation and Japan are in a difficult situation due to Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, so it is now difficult to say anything definitive about the peace treaty negotiations.

Hayashi added that the Japanese government strictly adheres to its position on resolving the territorial issue and concluding a peace treaty with the Russian Federation – this has not changed.

The Secretary General reminded that before the start of World War II, there was a dialogue between Japan and Russia aimed at establishing peace, but after Tokyo imposed sanctions on the Russian Federation, this process was “unilaterally” suspended on the initiative of Moscow.

On January 30, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida once again announced that he wanted to sign a peace treaty with Moscow (which was never signed after World War II), but that Tokyo would not change its policy towards the “northern regions”. Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev responded by saying that Russia “does not care” about Japanese views and that new Russian weapons could be deployed to the Kuril Islands in the future.
