The left is ready to strike out on its own, Robert Biedroń, co-chair of the New Left, said on Tuesday. He added that he regrets that it has not been possible to build a broad coalition for the local elections.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that it had been decided to apply for registration of the Civic Coalition Election Commission for the local government elections.
I guarantee that I will use all my authority, if I have it among the coalition partners, so that even a heated election campaign will not divide anyone in the coalition on October 15. I’m actually sure it will work
– said Tusk.
Biedroń: The Left is ready to take off on its own
Robert Biedroń, whose formation spoke to KO about the formula for participation in the local elections, referred to the words of the head of government in an interview with the Polish Press Agency.
We are prepared to start on our own, although we have tried to convince our colleagues to start together in a coalition. It didn’t work and we as the left regret that, because when we found a common denominator for governing, we co-created the government, it seemed natural that we would work together.
– he said.
As the New Left co-chair noted, the formula for participating in the local elections will not divide the formations that make up the current coalition majority.
This will not cause any conflicts
– he assured.
The left will operate as a broad, united formation, placing even more emphasis on the need to fight for left-wing values, especially when we see that it is difficult to obtain a majority on many left-wing demands, Biedroń said.
“Greater ability to emphasize differences”
According to him, “this result from the left should be stronger, so that issues related to good public services, access to health care, education, housing and public transport are even better implemented.”
The left will now have a greater opportunity to emphasize these differences, that we have always been credible in this struggle and – if anyone wants a well-organized, self-governing Poland – we will encourage them to do so and ask for votes for us. – he emphasized.
The politician also noted that all cooperating formations work alongside each other, but each goes its own way.
This Saturday we will announce the starting formula and with what environments and in what configurations we will start, Biedroń said, noting that the National Council of the New Left will meet on Saturday.
Local government elections
When asked about local cooperation with the Civic Coalition and Trzecia Droga, Biedroń replied that his party was open to such a possibility.
We will start the regional meetings separately, and other scenarios are on the table
– added.
We are the formation that most emphasizes the need for cooperation and the search for what unites us, and we will continue to do so – wherever possible.
– he pointed out.
The local elections will take place on April 7. Two weeks later, the second round of elections for municipalities, mayors and city presidents will take place.
