I think that during this session of the Sejm we will submit a project on abortion together with Poland 2050, PSL MP Marek Sawicki said on Friday. As he added, the most appropriate thing would be to restore the so-called 1993 abortion compromise, and then call a referendum.
Sawicki was asked on RMF FM radio whether there would be discipline in the PSL regarding the bill on abortion up to the 12th week, authored by KO. He replied: “There is no position in the PSL on this issue, nothing has changed for 128 years in matters of worldview, in matters of religion, conscience and challenge, we have no legal rules and everyone votes as he or she want to.
When asked if PSL would seek a referendum on the issue, he said:
We believe that the most appropriate way is to restore the 1993 compromise. This can be done through law. I think the president would agree on this issue as well. Later, a referendum would actually be held and the citizens’ decision would be final
– he emphasized.
When asked whether Prime Minister Donald Tusk agreed to the referendum, Sawicki replied:
And what significance does Donald Tusk have in this? He is the head of one of the coalition parties. This is not a project of the government, but of the PO, i.e. the head of one of the parties, not the head of the government. (…) We will submit our project and see how the Sejm will decide. If the PO project wins, I obviously won’t tear my clothes.
When asked when they would submit their project on this issue, he said: “Together with Szymon Hołownia’s group, I think it will be during this meeting.”
On Wednesday evening, the Sejm received a bill from a group of MPs from the Civic Coalition parliamentary club on abortion. It is assumed that a pregnant person has the right to health care in the form of termination of pregnancy during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy.
Last November Two left-wing projects regarding the liberalization of abortion regulations were submitted to the Sejm. One of them partially decriminalizes abortion and its assistance, the other allows termination of pregnancy until the end of the twelfth week of its duration.
Anti-abortion rules in force in Poland since 1993 were amended following the October 2020 Constitutional Court ruling. Previously, the Law on Family Planning, Protection of the Human Fetus and Conditions for the Permissibility of Termination of Pregnancy, known as the Abortion Compromise , also allowed abortion in the case of severe and irreversible fetal impairment or an incurable disease threatening his life. The Constitutional Tribunal ruled that this ground for termination of pregnancy was unconstitutional, sparking a wave of protests across the country. This provision expired with the publication of the Constitutional Court ruling in January 2021.
“New Justice”
We must start working on a new legal system in Poland. This legal dualism we have cannot last forever. We must find a solution based on consensus, PSL MP Marek Sawicki said on Friday.
I am convinced that, apart from defense issues, the subject of the (Friday) talks (by the President of PSL, the Head of the Ministry of National Defense) Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and President Andrzej Duda will also be issues related to the legal system , because this legal dualism that we have cannot last forever, we must find a consensus-based solution that will lead us to recognize judges, judgments and the legal status that should apply in a democratic state
– said Sawicki on RMF FM.
In the context of his proposal to set up a consensus team, the PSL politician was asked whether such a team was already in formation.
I am waiting for Kosiniak-Kamysz’s meeting with the president. If there is any acceptance, we will start such work. Yesterday I also spoke with representatives of the left. They are also interested in setting up such a team and starting a new legal system in Poland, because the current one is dysfunctional.
– he assessed.
As he said, the team would consist of “experts and professors in the field of law so that we could consider what was broken, to what extent and how we could fix it.”
It must include representatives of the opposition, the coalition and the president
– added.
On Friday, President Andrzej Duda will meet with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz at the National Security Bureau.
Apparently this is what the conservatism of the Polish People’s Party is supposed to look like. Is that all Tusk will allow them to do?
