“The ‘October 15 Coalition’ in power in Poland should join forces in local government elections and agree on common candidates; I think a decision will be made within a few days on what the individual election committees will look like,” KO MP Mariusz Witczak told PAP.
PO and New Left together for local government elections?
The Civic Platform and New Left have started discussions about creating a joint coalition in the local elections to be held on April 7. On January 20, the Minister of Science and Vice President of the New Left, Dariusz Wieczorek, announced that regional authorities would present their proposals on the issue at the end of January.
Earlier, the national board of the New Left gave the leaders of the parties: Robert Biedroń and Włodzimierz Czarzasty permission to enter into coalition talks with the chairman of the PO, Donald Tusk.
We are a governing coalition and in this form we must participate in the local and European elections
– Biedroń told PAP.
KO MP Mariusz Witczak is also in favor of joining forces in local elections as part of the coalition currently in power in Poland.
The October 15 coalition must – where possible – agree on common candidates and join forces. This is the motto that must accompany us
– the KO MP told PAP.
The statement of the Civic Platform, or more broadly the Civic Coalition, very clearly emphasizes the need to consolidate the political scene of the parties currently in power in Poland, i.e. the so-called coalition on October 15
– explained the politician.
We are in favor of closer cooperation, but the final decisions are still ahead of us
– noted the politician.
Binding decisions of the committees – on days
He emphasized that the date of the municipal elections had already been announced and that there was little time left for preparations.
I think that within a few days a decision will be made on what the individual electoral commissions will look like
– he said.
The politician also pointed out that the agreement has a very important value when it comes to direct elections of municipal heads, mayors and presidents, because here a very valuable political strategy is to join forces and not to divide votes.
For this reason, the KO MP believes that one broad bloc should be created within the coalition currently in power in Poland, together with the Third Way – i.e. PSL and Polska 2050.
However, it would be best if we all join forces in the local government elections. I think it would be very useful. But if for some reason this is not possible, there will obviously be no tragedy, because we can work together locally and perhaps negotiate separate, local options to support individual candidates. I see a very serious opportunity for this
– he pointed out.
The second round of elections will be of strategic importance
In this context, the MP pointed out that the second round of elections would be of strategic importance.
Because even if our candidates do not win in the first round, there will certainly be consolidation in the second round
– he assessed.
Regardless of the current options, the KO politician is optimistic about the election results.
I believe that after the April elections we will have the opportunity to govern in all parliaments as part of the coalition currently in power in Poland.
– he emphasized.
Third Way Coalition
On January 11, the leaders of Poland 2050 and PSL – Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Szymon Hołownia – announced that their formations would establish a joint electoral committee for voivodeship assemblies, provinces and municipalities and continue the Third Way project.
On January 20, Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Ministry of National Defense, Chairman of PSL, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, said that it would be very good if two blocs were created in the local elections: the Third Way as one and the PO with the left second. “We will not win local elections in many voivodeships if we are all on one list,” he said.
The local elections will take place on April 7 and 21.
If the well-being of local communities and the performance of local activists who do not prioritize political colors are not important, then there are coalitions of parties with only one goal: to gain as much power as possible.
