The editorial staff of “Deutsche Welle” reported that the visit of Bundesrat President Manuela Schwesig to Poland was canceled by the Senate due to the protests of PiS politicians. It turns out that the Senate is explaining the whole situation quite vaguely. He states that the reason for postponing the visit was… “difficulties in specifying the timeframes in February 2024”, which was reportedly due to “the dynamics of other political events”.
The press service of the Senate Chancellery informed PAP that Schwesig’s visit, scheduled for February, has been postponed to a later date to be determined by the chancelleries of both parliaments.
The reason for postponing the date of the visit is the difficulty of specifying the time frame in February 2024 initially planned for the implementation of this visit, which arises from the dynamics of other political events
– it said.
The Senate Chancellery emphasizes that the Senate has maintained good contacts with the German Bundesrat since 1993, including: at the level of parliamentary speakers.
The cooperation between both institutions will continue

The President of the German Federal Council and Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Manuela Schwesig, was due to make her first foreign trip as head of the Bundesrat to Poland at the end of February – at the invitation of the Senate President, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska.
The Polish editors of “Deutsche Welle” discovered that the Senate had withdrawn from inviting the President of the Bundesrat to Poland; she noted that opposition politicians protested the visit. On Tuesday, the Bundesrat press service confirmed to the editorial staff of “Deutsche Welle” that the visit and meeting of the President of the Bundesrat with the Polish Senate President would take place as planned. Schwesig also planned to bring representatives of German companies from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the country where she is prime minister, to Poland.
Schwesig’s support for the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline
The Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has been criticized by Poland in the past.
The reason for this was the active support for the completion of the Russian-German Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea. The controversial project was also heavily criticized, especially by Poland. The gas pipeline was not launched due to the Russian attack on Ukraine
– reminiscent of “Welt”.
Manuela Schwesig has been president of the Bundesrat since November 1. It is the second chamber of the German parliament, next to the Bundestag, in which representatives of the federal states sit. The chairman is elected for a period of one year from the prime ministers of the governments of the individual states.
As you can see, the Senate gave a rather enigmatic answer to the question of why the visit of the President of the Bundesrat to Poland was postponed. Are you afraid to admit what the truth is?
