“I expect a sharp conversation, sharp speeches, I expect a sharp Sejm, but I don’t expect a brawl – said Marshal Szymon Hołownia at a press conference before the start of today’s Sejm session. When asked about the fate of the vice chairman of the Sejm of the Confederation, he said that “the decision has not yet been made.” Regarding the depoliticization of the justice system, he in turn said that “it must take place in an atmosphere of dialogue.”
During the session starting today, the Sejm will continue work on the draft budget law and the draft budget law. In addition, parliamentarians will hold a second reading of the draft resolution on the establishment of a commission of inquiry into Pegasus. In addition, the Sejm will continue work on the government’s draft amendment to the Law Establishing the Law – Law on Higher Education and Science. Members of the European Parliament must also appoint the President of the Office for the Protection of Personal Data.
Szymon Hołownia was asked at a press conference whether he was prepared for the possible blocking of the Sejm proceedings and the parliamentary stage by PiS MPs.
Hołownia: I am not the master or programmer of the behavior of parliamentarians
I am not the master or programmer of the behavior of the parliamentarians, I do not know what they will do. However, I know that some excesses, such as blocking the podium or physically obstructing parliamentary proceedings, serve no one today. People are fed up with wars and quarrels and would like to see people who are of course different from each other, but who still maintain a form of contact with each other, which is not the form known from the time of noble democracy, when someone called a liberum veto and interrupted the Sejm, which had to deal with important matters for the Republic of Poland
– replied the Chairman of the Sejm.
I don’t expect a fight in the room today. I don’t think that will happen
– he emphasized.
The law firm is ready for various variants
Hołownia noted that the Chancellery of the Sejm and the Presidium of the Sejm are prepared for different variants.
I don’t expect something like this to happen today, maybe I will be disappointed and my trust in people will smoothly turn into naivety. I expect a sharp conversation, sharp speeches, I expect a sharp Sejm, but I don’t expect a fight. I hope I won’t be disappointed
– said the Chairman of the Sejm.
What is the decision regarding Deputy Marshal Bosak?
The Sejm will also deal, among other things, with the left’s request to dismiss the Sejm’s deputy chairman, Krzysztof Bosak, from the Confederation after the party’s MP, Grzegorz Braun, used a powder fire extinguisher to extinguish Hanukkah candles that were lit in the Sejm. Then he appeared on the Sejm podium when Deputy Marshal Bosak chaired the meeting and – according to the ruling coalition – he did not react decisively enough, and the proceedings were taken over by Marshal Szymon Hołownia.
The left argued that Bosak allowed Braun to make an anti-Semitic speech that, among other things, called the Hanukkah candlelight ceremony “racist.”
Asked whether “Bosak’s days in the Presidium of the Sejm are numbered,” Hołownia replied: “Discussions are still ongoing between us and the coalition partners on how to behave in this situation.”
He emphasized that he was putting “two goods” at stake. As he added, it is difficult for him to imagine that a representative of MP Braun would sit on the Sejm presidium. But – he noted – the presence of Deputy Marshal Krzysztof Bosak as a representative of the opposition group brings “a kind of political tension” that is necessary in such bodies. He added that it’s good to “see your argument in someone else’s.”
The decision has not yet been made. The clubs are discussing this matter today. We’ll see how it turns out
– emphasized Hołownia.
What about Bodnar’s actions? Hołownia: I think he has an idea
Szymon Hołownia was also asked whether he fully supports the actions of the Minister of Justice, Attorney General Adam Bodnar.
If the Attorney General has a national prosecutor with whom he cannot reach an agreement because he sabotages his ideas and decisions, then this situation demands a solution.
– said the Chairman of the Sejm. As he noted, “he understands that Minister Bodnar’s decisions will be a solution to a systemic change that will mean that we no longer have to see similar things, such as the politicization of the prosecutor’s office or the legal system, but only the prosecutor will go its own way, and the executive branch will go its own way, because this is what needs to be done.”
I believe Secretary Bodnar has a systemic idea to resolve this situation. However, I believe that, as far as possible, it should be conducted in an atmosphere of conversation between all participants in this game – a dialogue, an attempt to find a way out of this clinch in which we find ourselves, in an attempt to change the situation. country.
– said the marshal
The government must “explain and show that this is not about political revenge”
According to him, the government must “explain and show that this is not about political revenge, but an attempt to save the justice system.” “It is also similar in terms of media,” he added.
Specific actions are needed, but they will not be enough without systemic change, and everyone must be invited to this change. We have to talk about it with the president and the opposition and look for solutions
– said the Chairman of the Sejm.
The Ministry of Justice announced on January 12 that the Prime Minister had entrusted the duties of the First Deputy Attorney General – National Prosecutor to a prosecutor from the National Prosecutor’s Office, Jacek Bilewicz. Bilewicz replaced Dariusz Barski as acting national prosecutor.
On January 15, the Constitutional Court ordered the Attorney General to refrain from actions that would prevent Dariusz Barski from exercising his powers; also suspended the decision to appoint Jacek Bilewicz as Acting National Prosecutor. The National Prosecutor’s Office believes that Barski is the national prosecutor, and Bodnar’s letter “indicating that in his opinion the National Prosecutor is a retired prosecutor has no legal effect.”
