Former Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, admitted in an interview published on Sunday that, looking at the increasing centralization of the European Union and Brussels’ interference in the affairs of member states, he understands why the British decided to leave the Union.
In an interview with the Daily Express newspaper, Morawiecki warned that although the EU promotes many values, these centralizing trends could lead to its implosion.
Well, I’m probably different from most British people who were in favor of leaving the European Union because I believe that the European Union has its values and benefits. But I think the tendency, the trend, is now very dangerous. And I understand better why Britain made this decision
– said Morawiecki when asked if he understood the decisions on Brexit after his own experience in relations with the European Commission.
The former prime minister said the European Commission’s suspension of money payments to Poland was “absolutely” an attempt to influence the outcome of last year’s parliamentary elections.
When it comes to various EU policies, there has certainly been interference in our internal affairs
– he declared.
Wrong direction
Referring to Brussels taking further powers, he said:
I think this is going in the wrong direction and will ultimately lead to the implosion of the European Union. I absolutely believe that the European Union is a very valuable organization from the point of view of the free market, cooperation within the internal market, various freedoms and the free movement of capital, people, goods and services. But the more powers the European Commission acquires and takes over, the less a sovereign state has to say, as it turns out.
When we read the recent plans of the European Parliament and the European Commission regarding treaty reforms, I think this is very, very dangerous for the stability of the European Union. Because, first of all, it deprives sovereign states of their fundamental rights in security, foreign policy, tax policy, which is the backbone of any sovereign state, and in many, many other areas
– explained Morawiecki.
He judged that the centralization of powers in 67 new areas would not facilitate the functioning of the EU.
This is of great concern to me, but (Donald) Tusk’s government has confirmed its agreement to these changes
– added.
