Italian writer, socialist activist and former communist, died in 1978 Ignazio Silone warned:
The new fascism will not say, “I am fascism,” it will say that it is anti-fascism.
No one has better captured the nature of our times. Self-proclaimed arch-democrats, waving colorful banners, accuse real democrats of all kinds of crimes and even introduce murders that the Western world has not seen for centuries. Freedom of expression becomes a fiction, the choice is limited to one product in multiple packages. To paraphrase Silone: real lawlessness came to us in the guise of defenders of the rule of law. He came in with a bang and kicked the door open, assisted by docile police. It declared itself the sole source of law, its interpreter and at the same time its enforcer.
Not even a month has passed with the new government and we already have political prisoners. The public media were taken over with naked violence. The media monopoly is about to disappear. And it’s not all “for a while”. A government that has a penchant for authoritarian rule will never give it up. Both out of fear of falling and being punished, and because of the simple human tendency to make life easier.
The situation is dramatic. It requires finding a more suitable name that no one has suggested yet. But it is already certain that it is really a regime – different from the previous ones, specific, adapted to our times, but a regime. The purest water regime.
