Deputy Minister of Justice Maria Ejchart referred to the issue of the detention of Maciej Wąsik and Mariusz Kamiński during a press conference.
They are currently in the transition procedure, the admission procedure. It can last up to 14 days, during which time any convict admitted to prison is treated according to the same procedure: he is examined by a doctor, undergoes personal and cognitive tests, i.e. meets with an educator, can meet with a psychologist, if necessary . , is subject to the necessary sanitary procedures. During this time, the penitentiary committee will decide where the men will ultimately serve their sentences
– she inquired Maria Ejchart.
The Deputy Minister of Justice claimed that Maciej Wąsik and Mariusz Kamiński were not political prisoners.
I would like to say clearly that the fact that a politician is in prison does not mean that he is a political prisoner. (…) It cannot be said that they are political prisoners; this is abuse
– she added.
Maria Ejchart was also asked about the case of Mariusz Kamiński’s hunger strike.
Everyone has the right not to eat or drink. In a situation where a convicted person is under the care of the state, he or she is subjected to very detailed medical examinations, especially in such a situation. Of course, he could be placed in an infirmary or a prison hospital
– she said.
The Deputy Minister of Justice declared that the act of clemency applied by the President towards Maciej Wąsik and Mariusz Kamiński was invalid.
The president had no right to pardon people who had not been legally convicted. (…) Mr. President may exercise his right to a pardon now that we have a final judgment
– she said.
