Lithuania’s Seimas (parliament) is unable to tighten restrictions on Belarusians in the country – especially regarding the issuance of residence permits – due to a lack of votes. This was announced by Laurynas Kaciunas, Chairman of the Sejm Committee for National Security and Defense, the agency quoted him as saying “Sputnik.Lithuania”.
“We are proposing this compromise. To be honest, there is no vote for it in the Sejm so far,” Kasciunas said.
It was noted that in December the legislature made amendments to the legislation proposing to limit the issuance of residence permits to Belarusian citizens, except for highly qualified specialists.
At the same time, within the framework of the same changes, it is proposed to facilitate the entry of Belarusian and Russian citizens into the country for “humanitarian reasons”.
Before that the European Commission allocated Lithuania has around €10 million to strengthen its refugee reception system; The aim of the funds is to strengthen the capacity of the EU’s external border and provide conditions for the reception and accommodation of incoming refugees.
