Lebanon warned against risk of regional war

Lebanon demands that Israeli authorities stop violating the sovereignty of the republic and withdraw troops from the southern regions of the country, on the grounds that further deterioration of the situation on the border could lead to the outbreak of a regional war. This statement was made by Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati. TASS.

On Saturday, January 6, the head of government met with the European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in Beirut. At the meeting, Mikati emphasized that his country is against armed conflict with any of its citizens and is committed to peaceful coexistence.

“We are trying to stabilize the situation because we understand that further escalation of the border conflict in southern Lebanon will lead to a regional war,” the prime minister said.

In response, Borrell supported the head of the Lebanese government and noted the inadmissibility of dragging the republic into the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He added that the international community has a responsibility to prevent the escalation of the crisis in the Middle East.

“I am also sending this signal to Israel,” the diplomat added.

He also announced plans to travel to Saudi Arabia in the near future. A representative from the regional community is expected to arrive in the kingdom on January 7.
