In the second part of the “Journalists’ Salon”, the main topic of which was the unlawful attack on the public media, discussions included: on the need to defend freedom of expression in Poland, the importance of communicating with the world about the illegal actions of the current government in Poland and the total liquidation of the public media “so as not to talk about certain issues.”
READ ALSO: “Journalism Salon”. On wPolsce.pl TV there is a conversation about the attack on TVP. “Usurpers broadcast. This is something that will stay with us for many months to come.”
There was no Blitzkrieg
It was an important moment for the defenders of public media on Powstańców Square, the realization that the authorities admitted that the first entry based on the decision of the Minister of Culture was illegal. This is something that certainly gives you the will to fight and perseverance, which means that – looking back – you can say that you were right, but also believe that the rule of law works in Poland and that somewhere in the end it will. based on the courts, which – if they want to be fair – will have to enter the correct data in the National Court Register.
— commented on the situation of people defending TVP Info in the buildings at pl. Powstańców Warszawy Michał Karnowski, adding that there may be more disappointments on this road.
We can expect various tricks or things to get so confused that no one knows exactly what is going on.
– he added, emphasizing:
There was no Blitzkrieg. It was not possible to carry out the operation – as Donald Tusk previously boasted – to take over the media quickly and painlessly, in accordance with the law, as he understands it. The resistance turned out to be great
– he said, recalling that “the pro-Polish camp was also able to ensure the presence of parliamentarians who demanded a legal basis for the actions of individual aggressors.”
This is all documented too. However, Poles know this. So time works in favor of the defenders of the square. Warsaw insurgents
– Michał Karnowski added.
The world needs to know what is going on here
During the program, among other things, it was recalled: statement by Prof. Piotr Gliński about the fact that we are dealing with a much broader operation than just breaking democracy and censoring the media, but we are also dealing with introducing terror into society, forcing it to accept further acts of lawlessness.
The stakes are much higher. There was a deliberate and brutal liquidation of state and democratic structures
– said Elżbieta Królikowska-Avis, recalling “attempts to govern Poland using not laws, but resolutions, which her friends – BBC journalists – do not want to believe.”
The world needs to know what is going on here
– she appealed.
In this case, public opinion in the West is not aware of what is happening here. Or she doesn’t want to know about it
– admitted Goran Andrijanić.
We may be dealing with a precedent here that will be repeated in other institutions in Poland
– added.
Poland is a lawless country
I felt threatened when I realized how much they were at odds with the European institutions, that they unleashed such a frenzy as the brazen, forceful takeover of the TVP building, taking over the signal, fully aware that Europe wouldn’t move. After all, it happened on the day that the Vice-President of the European Commission, Věra Jourová, was in Poland […] The awareness of this lawlessness is clear.
– noted Marcin Wikło, adding that the second lawlessness happening before our eyes is the decision to liquidate the public media.
Poland becomes a lawless country. It used to be a country where lawlessness was even greater, but we will come back to that
– Elżbieta Królikowska-Avis agreed with the previous speaker and emphasized the importance of letting the world know about this.
In this context, the studio wPolsce.pl was reminded of the letter from the President of PAP, Wojciech Surmacz, about the attack on the independence of the public media in Poland to 500 journalists from around the world, and a similar letter from the President from Polish Radio, Agnieszka Kamińska, from the European Broadcasting Union.
Let us not be under the illusion that someone will bring us freedom of expression
Will the state of murder be noticed around the world? Will the world accept it? Will this be a permanent stain on Donald Tusk’s ‘suit’?
– this question was asked by host Jacek Karnowski in the next part of “Salon Dziennikarski”.
Editor Michał Karnowski answered this with three questions:
Or a strong, sovereign Poland, with independent public media that pursues our national interest […] is the world necessary? The answer is no. But was it ever necessary? Did anyone want this in 2015? Nor. So this world is important. It is good that we are raising the alarm that this is leaving a mark on the polished face of our liberals, but let us not be under the illusion that someone will solve it for us, that someone will bring us freedom of speech. We have to fight for this
– he said.
Michał Karnowski’s second fundamental question was whether the takeover of the public media went according to the plan of the ‘aggressors’, and whether in this context they have something to brag about to the world?
Well, things didn’t go according to plan. They were counting on a blitzkrieg and it didn’t work
– he said.
The third question concerned whether those who decided to take over the public media in Poland had a good understanding of Poland’s national character.
It often leads us to various mistakes, but I think the Poles have tasted freedom. When I ask about the future, it is often in the corridors of the TVP building at pl. Powstańców Warszawy I hear one sentence: “it seems to us that we have signals that for Poland the world of media monopoly that we had before 2015 will be unacceptable.” It’s also a struggle to make sure it doesn’t really go smoothly
– said Michał Karnowski.
Liquidation of the media not to talk about certain issues
The next part of the “Journalists Salon” was about the liquidation of the public media announced by Minister Sienkiewicz, which could have further manifestations in the form of the liquidation of other important institutions and state-owned companies.
This is post-communist thinking. In my opinion, there are post-communist secret services in the background. It will be a snowball effect. This thinking started with the legislature, then with the judiciary, and now they are starting to focus on the fourth branch, which is the media. In this way, all state structures are already being violated.
– assessed Elżbieta Królikowska-Avis and further added in her statement that the results of the October 15 elections showed a change in Polish society, including the Eastern Wall of Poland as no longer the area of the PiS electorate. This shows – as she said – that we do not yet have a civil society.
Civil society not only has its privileges, but also its responsibilities
– she said.
Marcin Wikło, in turn, noted that Third Way voters did not necessarily vote for the changes in media and the way they are introduced that we are currently seeing.
It is very important what you tell the Poles (reality – editor’s note). And what does Tusk need the media for? To not talk about certain things. And it is our duty to fulfill this mission: to fill the void left by public media.
– he noted without hiding that it will not be possible to completely fill this gap, but “our task is to strive for it and talk about it loudly.”
The role of the Internet, the role of conservative commercial media, is of great importance
– added.
It’s true that we may be losing public media, but it’s no longer the media scene we had in 2015. The layout is different now
- added Goran Andrijanić, suggesting together with other guests of the “Journalists Salon” that there are already hundreds of thousands of Poles in Poland who – as Jacek Karnowski said – already enjoyed having their voice in the media. A voice that wants to be heard from them.
Shame on the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity
Finally, the participants of the “Journalists’ Salon” spoke about the call of the head of the Ministry of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, for the army to participate in the collection of the Grand Orchestra of Christmas Charity, as well as the deprivation of parliamentary seats and the attempt to jail “people who courageously fought corruption in Poland.”
Among other things, it was recalled: political activities before the elections of Jerzy Owsiak, which discredited the entire WOŚP initiative.
This shows what this coalition stands for. These are not only these eleven parties, but also the former militia and former services
– said Elżbieta Królikowska-Avis.
I have good contact with NGOs and the third sector and I know that there has always been tacit consent for what Owsiak does. Now it’s impossible not to go deeper. Owsiak did something that discredited the entire third sector and showed that these are companies that cannot be trusted.
– said Marcin Wikło.
Michał Karnowski, in turn, recalled the campaign against Mariusz Kamiński and his former deputy at the CBA, Maciej Wąsik, noting that this proves the current government’s belief that this power has been acquired forever.
On the square The rebels also often say that all power passes. And they are – when Sienkiewicz broke the law – already at the point where they will be afraid to safely give up power. They know
– Michał Karnowski concluded the discussion and meeting in the “Salon Journalists” on television wPolsce.pl.
