At the first meeting of the Commission of Inquiry to investigate the legality, regularity and purposefulness of the actions taken in preparation and implementation of the 2020 elections for the President of the Republic of Poland, Dariusz Joński of the Civic Platform was elected Chairman of the committee in 2020. in the form of a postal vote. Joński proposed holding the first substantive meeting of the committee on Friday, December 22 at 9:00 am.
The first meeting of the envelope elections committee
The committee’s deliberations were opened by the deputy chairman of the Sejm, Włodzimierz Czarzasty of the New Left. The presidency of the committee was then elected. Dariusz Joński of the Civic Platform became chairman. His deputies were: Waldemar Buda from PiS, Jacek Karnowski from PO and Bartosz Romowicz (PL2050-TD).
Reliable, effective and professional, that is how I imagine the committee to work under my chairmanship. I want to say that we will do everything we can to ensure that the commission shows whether the authorities of our state broke the law in organizing envelope elections. And if so, who should bear the consequences and what should the consequences be? To discover and show the truth, but also to identify possible perpetrators of violations of the law
– said Joński.
Joński proposed holding the first substantive meeting of the committee on Friday, December 22 at 9:00 am.
There are a few things we need to meet about. First of all, I will propose a decision on a statement for each MP of the investigation committee or on the circumstances mentioned in art. 4. – there is information that there may be a conflict of interest
- said Joński, adding that there will also be a resolution on the number of permanent advisors, which will correspond to the number of MPs sitting on the committee – so that each club will have as many permanent advisors as there are committee representatives.
The meeting will also present the committee’s work plan, which will identify the first witnesses to be invited to the hearing. He also asked for the first requests for evidence.
We act quickly but accurately. I would like this committee to be an example of the fact that the work of the committee can take months, not years, as was previously the case. People expect this committee to be accountable for exactly what it was established for. I would like us to invite witnesses who will add something to the case
– said Joński.
PiS presents the first witnesses
PiS representatives have already proposed calling the first witnesses: Rafał Trzaskowski, Małgorzata Kidawa Błońska and Tomasz Grodzki.
We want to make it clear who actually blocked the organization of the elections
– Waldemar Buda noted.
There is no reason to extend the committee’s work until Friday and we can take a number of actions today. My proposal and that of my club is to table a proposal for witnesses today. I think of Marshal Kidawa-Błońska, Rafał Trzaskowski and Marshal Tomasz Grodzki. These are people who have publicly said they blocked the election. We would like to ask about their purpose. we all suspect it and we have a clear thesis based on media appearances
– said Waldemar Buda, who asked Paweł Jabłoński, a member of the committee, to submit an application for supporting documents.
We have a new fact in the form of the termination of the procedure regarding the postal elections. This is a new case, from a week ago. We would like to include the files of this case and the proceedings with the work of the current committee. My appeal is simple: let us not prolong the work; the first witness proposals are due today
– said Waldemar Buda.
Joński refuses to work
Joński said the first decisions would be made at the meeting on Friday. PiS politicians – Prof. Przemysław Czarnek, Mariusz Krystian and Paweł Jabłoński indicated their willingness to work and there was no point in postponing the work until Friday.
Jacek Karnowski stated that during this committee meeting there is no possibility of doing any work other than electing the chairman and vice-chairmen of the committee, and convening the meeting for Friday is an “explicit procedure”.
You’re off to a very bad start, Mr. President. Less arrogance, more personal culture, less formalism, less scrutiny of the statements of members of the investigative committee. Please, no rudeness on the part of the presenters. Since you are such a formalist, the question is: what have we been doing here since Marshal Czarzasty left the room? As you indicated, the first meeting concerns solely the election of the Presidium. Being such formalists, we should end the session and call a meeting, but here we are, in violation of the regulations. The regulations are there to ensure that the members of the investigation committee can function. We’re all here, we can call another meeting in an hour
– said Prof. Przemysław Czarnek.
Czarnek also pointed out that the resolution on the investigative committee clearly states that the subject of the investigation is whether the funds spent to prepare for these elections were not spent aimlessly.
How can we investigate this if we cannot identify or question the people who blocked the May 10 elections, meaning this money was spent pointlessly? In that sense, this committee makes no sense. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate who prevented the goal from being achieved. I hope this is not a sign that you will not consider our requests for evidence at all
– said Prof. Czarnek.
Finally, Joński closed the committee meeting by announcing that the next one would start on Friday, December 22 at 9:00 am.
