The law on in vitro financing is technical and does not apply to the medical procedure itself, which is legal in Poland; it was a citizens’ project that received broad support and that is why the president decided to sign this law, Presidential Minister Wojciech Kolarski told Polsat News.
Trade in vitro with the president’s signature
On Friday, President Andrzej Duda signed an amendment to the law on in vitro financing from public funds. He also announced that, to ensure equal opportunities for all those dealing with the problem of infertility, he would introduce a bill in early January that would provide public funding for other treatment methods.
Earlier the same day, the chairman of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, asked the president to refuse to sign the bill or refer it to the Constitutional Court.
Already after the President signed the law, Archbishop Gądecki announced that this decision points to Andrzej Duda’s misunderstanding of the whole issue and it seems as if he followed the voice of the crowd, without taking into account bioethical issues.
Technical law
Presidential Minister Wojciech Kolarski pointed out on Polsat News that the act is technical and does not concern the in vitro method itself, which is legal in Poland, but only the system of its financing.
He recalled that the in vitro procedure was financed by many local authorities from their budgets. He also pointed out that it was a citizens’ project that received broad political support – a group of PiS MPs also voted in favor of it.
Taking all this into account, the President decided to sign this law, but at the same time – guided by the belief that not all Poles, due to the moral teachings of the Church, agree to this kind of treatment methods for infertility – announced that in January (. ..) he would submit the project so that other methods are also financed from the state budget
– he emphasized.
He added that according to the president, anyone who disagrees with the in vitro method has the right to have children and the state will help him in this.
The state must take into account the sensitivity of every citizen
