German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called for the rearmament of Europe in the face of increasing threats. In an interview Welt am SonntaBy the end of the decade, the world may face new challenges and the United States may risk shifting its focus to the Indo-Pacific region, he said.
According to Pistorius, Russia is significantly increasing its military power, which poses a threat to the Baltic states, Georgia and Moldova. At the same time, the German Minister of Defense predicts that the United States will reduce its military presence in Europe in the future due to its reorientation towards the Indo-Pacific region.
“We Europeans must be more involved in ensuring security on our own continent,” Pistorius said.
He also noted that it would take time for the continent to increase its weapons production.
“We have about 5-8 years to catch up in terms of the armed forces, industry and society,” the head of the German military department emphasized.
He also said it was clear that Europe may have to compensate for American aid to Ukraine if Washington cannot agree on new financing.
