Head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell said that Swedish citizen Johan Floderus, an employee of one of the EU institutions who appeared in court in Iran, is innocent.
“The trial of Swedish citizen and EU worker Johan Floderus started yesterday. “As the EU, we have made it clear from the very beginning that Floderus is innocent,” Borrell said.
He noted that there was no justification for depriving Floderus of his freedom and called for his release.
Borrell added that he raised this issue when he contacted Iranian officials.
The Swede was detained at Tehran airport on espionage charges while trying to leave Iran in April 2022.
Previously the European Union denied Lifting sanctions against Iran after October 18, as should be done within the framework of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear program. It was noted that the council found “compelling reasons” to lift the restrictions on October 18, as planned under the agreement.
