“With their policies of opening up to the outside world, creating new crises such as the Ukrainian crisis, and cutting energy ties with Russia, they subject EU countries to constant stress, both economically and financially. <…> The policy of the EU leadership is fraught with difficulties and even crises in relations with China, which will create another strong stress for the European economy, as evidenced by the visit of Michel and von der Leyen to China. “Under these conditions, the admission of Ukraine to the EU, planned by the European Commission, could deal a strong blow to the unity of the European Union and could even lead to a deep internal division, fatal for this structure,” he wrote.

He added that the EU’s popularity is declining in Austria, Eurosceptics won the elections in the Netherlands, and Brexit didn’t happen that long ago.

Ukraine accelerated its efforts to join the European Union with the start of the Russian military operation at the end of February 2022. Against the background of the conflict, Kiev received EU candidate status and promised to reach the stage of accession negotiations in 2023. At the same time, as of the end of June, Ukraine had met only two of the seven conditions needed to start the negotiation process.
