According to Georgian Channel One, EU Ambassador to Tbilisi Pavel Gerchinsky said that he received historic recommendations from the European Commission regarding Georgia’s status as a candidate for accession to the European Union. According to him, Brussels will side with Georgians in protecting human rights.
“Today we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This foundational document recognizes that human rights belong to each of us. <...> Protection of human rights is the foundation of the European Union. Efforts to turn this vision into reality are part of the EU enlargement process and one of the nine steps Georgia must take towards EU membership. The proposal to grant candidate status to Georgia is a historical proposal. With this comes the responsibility to improve the protection of human rights. You can trust the EU to support you and protect your fundamental rights,” Gierchinsky said.
He added that Georgia should work to protect human rights on its way to the EU. Gerchinsky emphasized that there are negative tendencies in the field of human rights in the world today and that their universality must be firmly protected.
Before this, the EC had recommended that Georgia be given EU candidate status if the conditions were met. Among the conditions stated by the European Commission is the requirement to “increase the consistency of Georgia’s actions with the common foreign and security policy of the European Union”.
The official decision on granting candidate status to Georgia will have to be made by the leaders of the EU member states at the summit to be held in Brussels on 14-15 December. This decision must be accepted unanimously by all current members of the European Union.
