Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that anti-Russian sanctions did not lead to the desired results, but this issue cannot be discussed openly in the European Union (EU). According to him, as a result of the restrictions, Russia has become more independent in sectors in which it did not operate before, he writes RIA News.

Fico noted that it is considered “politically incorrect” to raise the question of the appropriateness of sanctions against Russia in the EU. He noted: “If you try to discuss this issue and point out that sanctions are not working, you will be told that you are politically incorrect. “This is true, but such a view is not welcome in European Council meetings.”

Commenting on the upcoming 12th round of sanctions against Russia, Mr. Fico questioned the impact of these restrictions. He believes these could make life difficult for Russian citizens, but noted that the Russians’ ability to replace banned goods with products from other countries, such as China, should not be underestimated.

Robert Fico became Prime Minister of Slovakia in October. It is reported in the media that he and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban oppose the new aid package of 50 billion euros allocated from EU funds for Ukraine. In early November, the Slovak government also blocked the transfer to Kiev of 40.3 million euros of military aid approved by the previous government.
