It is appalling that the parliamentary majority is not addressing the issue of zero VAT on food at all; we have a ready project and we will strongly insist that they take action – told PAP MP Waldemar Buda (PiS), former Minister of Development and Technology.
“We have a project ready and we will push hard.”
The zero VAT rate on food was introduced on February 1, 2022, as part of one of the anti-inflation shields intended to protect society from increased inflation due to the price increases that preceded Russia’s attack on Ukraine. The zero rate applies until the end of this year.
MP Buda pointed out that the parliamentary majority is not concerned with this issue at all.
This is alarming, because from one day to the next, from January 1, the prices of the basic package of goods for Poland may increase by several or tens of percents. Let’s not forget that a tax increase is also an opportunity to increase prices by more than the tax itself
– he pointed.
He also pointed out that there is a PiS project underway in the Sejm to extend the zero rate.
We have a ready project and we will strongly urge the opposition to take action; to issue a regulation or a law that will protect the Poles
Buda said.
Prime Minister: ‘Unfortunately, Poland will pay for their approach at the cash register’
On November 20, PiS MPs submitted to the Sejm a draft amendment to the Goods and Services Tax Law, which envisages an extension of zero VAT on food from January 1 to the end of June 2024.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki posted a video about it on social media.
The law on zero VAT on food in the first half of 2024 is ready, but the new parliamentary majority has a problem with its adoption because it was drafted by our government.
– he said in the recording.
He comes up with various explanations, for example that we have not provided any money for this in the budget. This is of course not true, because the money is there
– he assured.
The head of government also emphasized that the Polish budget is in very good condition.
In recent years we introduced zero VAT on food through regulations, and no one complained. But if anyone looks for excuses, he will always find them. Like the ballerina from the well-known proverb
– said the Prime Minister.
The recording also quotes the November statement of KO MP Andrzej Domański, who – according to media reports – would become Minister of Finance in the government of PO leader Donald Tusk. “I believe that VAT should be returned to 5 percent.” – Domański then said on Radio Zet.
So as usual they just don’t want this solution. Unfortunately, the Poles will have to pay for their approach at the checkouts of their local shops and supermarkets
– said Morawiecki.
