I will be happy to appear before the investigative committee that would investigate the PiS government’s actions regarding the Covid pandemic – declares Janusz Cieszyński, PiS MP, until recently Minister of Digital Affairs and previously Deputy Minister of Health, in a interview with the weekly magazine “Sieci”.
We publish an excerpt of the conversation in which MP Cieszyński refers, among other things: to allegations regarding the purchase of medical equipment and hygiene products during the pandemic:
““Networking”: The Sejm has established a commission of inquiry into correspondence elections. At the time attempts were made to organize this, you were a deputy minister at the Ministry of Health. Today, politicians from the four-way coalition that comes to power behave as if they did not know how dramatic this moment was. Maybe it’s worth reminding them what happened next?
Janusz Cieszyński: It was a time when people with scientific degrees, doctors and experts sent their opinions to the Ministry of Health on what the presidential elections should look like. It was expected that the protection of anyone who would govern these elections, including members of electoral committees, would be the same as in the case of medical personnel who come into contact with sick people.
How are things in the ICU?
Almost yes. Today we know that those advices were inaccurate and often exaggerated. But that’s what infectious disease experts told us, and there was no other source of knowledge. Today it is easy to say that we should act differently. However, at the time there was enormous media pressure to follow these experts’ recommendations.
The opposition also made a major contribution at the time. Posters with President Duda’s image appeared on the streets, proclaiming that “May elections could kill”, asking: “Take power over the dead?” How can you blame United Right politicians for looking for a way out of this trap?
If you have a complaint against anyone, it is against those people who have not remained faithful to their medical oath in politics. Prof. Tomasz Grodzki then spoke about “killer envelopes”, which was completely absurd in the light of medical knowledge. He did not hesitate to use his authority as a professor of medicine in the current political game. Such behavior should disqualify people from both politics and treatment.
It is not clear how many investigative committees the new Sejm will appoint, but sometimes someone will mention a Covid committee that would, among other things, investigate the purchase of protective equipment, including masks and specialized equipment during the pandemic. Could there be something to investigate?
I will be happy to appear before such a committee. This is probably the only way to demystify the message of the media conglomerate that supports the opposition, which promotes the false narrative of Messrs. Szczerba and Joński. Very insulting and unfair, to say the least, to me and other people who then made difficult decisions to lead Poland through the pandemic. I would like to remind you that some people seem to forget: until August 2020, there was no day with more than a thousand new infections. No one died for lack of equipment, as was the case in Lombardy, for example.
What was it really like?
The truth is: while we operated under extremely difficult circumstances, we were always guided by the public interest. The purchase of such equipment was recommended by the National Advisor for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care. The company, which turned out to be unreliable, supplied medical equipment to state-owned companies involved in the fight against the pandemic and was reported by the management of the Foreign Intelligence Agency. These are often confidential matters and so far no one has attached any importance to knowing all the details. If an investigative committee is established, all the facts will come to light, and those who accused Professor Łukasz Szumowski and me will sink to the ground in shame.
The whole conversation in the latest issue of the weekly magazine “Sieci”. We advise!
