Donald Tusk’s recent statements about bringing the President of the National Bank of Poland before the State Tribunal went unnoticed. And yet the leader of the PO and the future Prime Minister effectively announced their capitulation on the issue. Maybe temporarily, but still.

Just a few days ago, Tusk said there was a majority in the Sejm to summon the president of the National Bank of Poland to the State Tribunal. This requires only an absolute majority of votes in the presence of at least half of the legal number of alternates. The four-way coalition that comes to power has the majority on this issue.
Earlier, during the campaign, Tusk regularly insulted President Glapiński and also announced that he would “take this man away” from the national bank’s headquarters. Now the tone is clearly different. Tusk limits his threats to… a technical description of the situation::
“A few days ago I inquired because a question was asked about a possible state court for President Kaczyński and President Duda. I have said frankly that when it comes to the political reality in this House, there is no majority to bring former PiS ministers, prime ministers and presidents before the State Tribunal, and there are institutions such as the National Broadcasting Council, the National Council of the Bank of Poland, where the required majority to be brought before the State Tribunal is lower and such a potential possibility exists, but it is a necessary condition, but not the only one, not the most important.
Tusk is also becoming concerned about the independence of the National Bank of Poland, admitting that this institution is particularly vulnerable to political attacks:
“As Marshal Hołownia noted: it is our common task to ensure the reputation and stability of institutions in Poland and the Central Bank, NBP, is one of the institutions that require special care and attention. I have no doubt: we will not do anything that would disrupt stability or undermine the reputation of the Polish state in Europe and beyond. This is one of my most important tasks, so that both Europe and the world can see that the time has returned when democratic norms and laws are taken seriously. “We will not do anything that would in the slightest undermine confidence in the Polish state.”
As always in the case of the PO leader’s actions, we also have the cat turning its tail. It turns out… the president of the National Bank of Poland is nervous. In fact, it was Tusk who started the attack and waged a months-long campaign against Prof. Glapiński:
I think this nervousness around Mr Glapiński has its reason. Not in our announcements or decisions, because we are still anticipating that. The nervousness surrounding Mr Glapiński stems from the awareness of the things he did during his time in office and that is why we will wait very calmly for the moment when we will make decisions together about Mr President.
Tusk did not specify what President Glapiński “did”, which is a shame. We can only remind you of that the president of the National Bank of Poland actually suppressed inflation without harming the economy. He did the opposite of what Tusk would have done, and he did the right thing.
Why does Tusk change his mind about the President of the National Bank of Poland? There are three events in the background. First, the Court of Justice of the European Union recalled its judgment in the Latvian Central Bank case, which clearly warned the four-way coalition not to cross the red line.
seconda survey among Polish economists confirmed that public opinion views PO’s allegations against the NBP president as fanciful and fictitious.
Thirdlya group of parliamentarians has submitted a request to the Constitutional Court to investigate the constitutionality of the law on the State Tribunal. The provision in question states that a person indicted by the Sejm, including President of the National Bank of Poland, shall be suspended from office.
AND Fourth: the NBP president took energetic actions and prepared for a long struggle. And once again it turned out that the will is of great importance. Tusk’s ranks had not even approached the defensive walls and the signal of retreat was already sounding.
Let this be a lesson to every independent institution that tries to attack Tusk. You have to defend yourself, and you can defend yourself effectively.
