EU Ambassador praises Georgia on the path to European integration

EU Ambassador to Georgia Pavel Gerchinsky stated that Tbilisi “has done a lot” to join the political union, and noted that the country’s government responded quickly and sent an action plan to Brussels on integration priorities. His words were quoted by the TV channel Imedi.

“I hope the 27 EU countries will make a positive decision” [по членству Грузии]. A lot has been done during this time, many initiatives have been taken in recent days. You know that for progress, for accession to the European Union, reforms are required both at this stage and at the next stage. I am glad that the Georgian government reacted quickly and sent an action plan on 9 priorities to Brussels…” said Gerchinsky.

He emphasized that it is very important for the European Union to support the Georgian people on their path to integration.

Previously in Georgia announced Further steps towards European integration. Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili called on “the opposition and the civil sector” to participate in the development of the plan. From Papuashvili’s point of view, in this case Georgia will achieve the necessary results to obtain the status of a candidate for accession to the European Union.

Before this EC Recommended Granting EU candidate status to Georgia, subject to conditions met. Among the conditions stated by the European Commission is the requirement to “increase the consistency of Georgia’s actions with the common foreign and security policy of the European Union”.

The official decision on granting candidate status to Georgia will have to be made by the leaders of the EU member states at the summit to be held in Brussels on 14-15 December. This decision must be accepted unanimously by all current members of the European Union.
