I came to Vilnius to discuss the issues and threats arising from treaty changes in the European Union; I spoke about this with the Deputy Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy Jovita Neliupsiene, Foreign Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk said during his visit to the Lithuanian capital.
I was talking about hasty, sudden changes proposed by the European Parliament, with the intention of going ahead with them as quickly as possible.
– noted Szynkowski vel Sęk.
That is why I have started a series of visits to the European partners with whom we would like to agree on a common position
– added the minister.
We need to exchange views on the threats posed by these treaties. I spoke last night with the minister responsible for European Affairs. The conclusion from these conversations is that the positions of Poland and Lithuania on these issues are very close. We are in favor of not rushing into a discussion on this subject
– said Szynkowski, also known as Sęk.
As the Minister noted, discussions about amending EU treaties should not start in a situation where we face many other security threats.
Lithuania, like us, has succeeded in convincing Western partners of the need to support Ukraine
– added.
Security challenges remain, not only in terms of the security of our territory, but also in terms of energy security. These challenges are crucial for all EU countries today. Attention cannot be diverted from these threats by proposals for profound political changes
– emphasized the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Transfer of EU powers
Szynkowski vel Sęk added that changes to the EU treaties would transfer many powers to the level of suprastate management.
Many areas of life that concern every citizen would be transferred to the EU level. It cannot be that the state has no influence on the lives of its citizens
– emphasized Szynkowski vel Sęk.
I spoke about this with Lithuania’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Jovita Nelupsiene, who will take up the position of EU Ambassador to the US next year. This is very good news because it will push for better transatlantic cooperation
– added the minister.
Szymon Szynkowski, also known as Sęk, also referred to the OSCE summit that starts on Thursday in the capital of North Macedonia, Skopje.
Neither I nor any of the ministry officials under my supervision will participate in this. Several other countries have made similar decisions, including: Lithuania. It is unacceptable to sit at the same table with Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs – the aggressor
– he said.
From Vilnius, the head of Polish diplomacy will go to the capital of Latvia, Riga, to discuss with partners the issues also discussed in Vilnius – the threats arising from hasty changes to the European treaties – Szynkowski vel Sęk announced.
