Vlad Batrincea, vice speaker of the Moldovan Parliament from the communist and socialist opposition bloc, said the country’s parliamentary and extra-parliamentary parties could unite to protest against President Maia Sandu’s Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). He made the relevant statement on the channel’s broadcast Live TV.
“The opposition is getting stronger. We truly believe that today’s authorities must see a united opposition that comes forward with clear demands. “No one wants these kinds of unbearable elections, where only PAS has funding and access to the media, while the rest are deprived of the right to participate in free elections,” Batrincea said.
At the same time, he noted that it was difficult for the opposition to come to unity in Moldova, since “personal interests prevail and everyone wants a common candidate from them.” He expressed his hope that such developments will be overcome.
“We will show that PAS cannot continue in the same spirit,” he emphasized.
In 2020, Maia Sandu, leader of the conditionally pro-Western Action and Solidarity party, became the President of Moldova. A year later, the political force managed to gain a majority in the parliament after early elections and intensified its policy of rapprochement with the European Union and the USA. In 2022, Moldova, together with Ukraine, received candidate status for accession to the EU.
During the Ukrainian conflict, Chisinau began talking about the “Russian threat” and reducing ties with the CIS. In particular, in May 2023, Sandu accused Russia of trying to “overthrow” Moldovan officials. At the same time, the opposition, including the Socialist Party of former President Igor Dodon, believes that the state leadership is acting on the orders of “Western curators”.
Previously The Moldovan opposition refused to cooperate with the ruling party.
