The issue of changing EU treaties is fundamental from the point of view of defending our state, Foreign Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk said on Tuesday morning. As he said, he will discuss this topic, among others, during the meetings: in Copenhagen, Brussels, Prague, Vilnius and Riga.
Changing treaties
In a resolution adopted in Strasbourg last week, the European Parliament supported amending the EU treaties. The main proposed changes include abandoning the principle of unanimity in EU Council voting in 65 areas and transferring powers from Member State level to EU level, including: through two new exclusive EU to create powers – in the areas of environmental protection and biodiversity (Article 3 TFEU) – and a significant extension of shared powers (Article 4), which would cover seven new areas: foreign and security policy, border protection, public health, civil defence, industry and education. The euro would become a mandatory currency for the Member States. The composition of the European Commission would be reduced to fifteen people, meaning that not every Member State would have its own commissioner. At the same time, the powers of the EC – referred to in the report as the ‘European executive power’ – would be expanded.
The new head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will convince other countries
During a briefing at Warsaw’s Okęcie military airport, the head of the Foreign Ministry pointed out “how dangerous adopting proposals to change treaties can be.”
As Minister of Foreign Affairs, I will go on missions to various European capitals to convince our partners how dangerous it can be to accept proposals to amend treaties.
– said the minister, quoted in the ministry’s profile on the X platform.
A proposal that, he continued, has been adopted by the European Parliament and will now be discussed in the General Affairs Council, which brings together the Ministers of European Affairs.
Later he will move to the level of prime ministers, to the European Council meeting
– added.
The head of the Foreign Ministry said that “unfortunately there is a Polish accent in the EP’s decision” – the votes of nine of our MEPs. The Members of the European Parliament who supported the resolution included: Róża Thun, Marek Balt, Marek Belka, Robert Biedroń, Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz, Łukasz Kohut, Bogusław Liberadzki, Leszek Miller and Sylwia Spurek.
Without their vote, this procedure would have ended. The European Parliament would reject these changes
– he pointed out.

Minister Szynkowski vel Sęk pointed out that in the EP “there is no domination, no collective majority of those who support the changes.”
Today we must focus all our efforts on convincing our partners. (…) We start visits to European capitals
– he emphasized.
He said that after his visit to Copenhagen he will go to Brussels and then to Prague, Vilnius, Riga and other cities.
We must pay attention to this topic, it is a fundamental topic from the point of view of the defense of our state, from the point of view of the competence of state authorities to decide the fate of Polish citizens.
– said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The issue of the proposals for treaty changes adopted by the European Parliament is fundamental, it is a question of the future of the state. That is why today I am starting visits to European capitals to talk to my closest partners about the threats posed by the EU’s centralist vision.
– he also emphasized on the X platform.
