It would be disastrous if Poland’s votes blocked the start of the debate on changes in the EU – said MEP Róża Thun (Poland 2050), who voted in favor of the EP resolution on treaty changes in the EU. According to KO MP Bartosz Arłukowicz, this is not a good time, “both in Poland and in Europe, to change treaties.”
In a resolution adopted in Strasbourg on Wednesday, the European Parliament supported amending the EU treaties. During the vote, 291 Members of the European Parliament were in favour, 274 against and 44 abstained.
Polish MEPs supporting the resolution included nine people – Róża Thun, Marek Balt, Marek Belka, Robert Biedroń, Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz, Łukasz Kohut, Bogusław Liberadzki, Leszek Miller and Sylwia Spurek – who served in the EP in 2019 were chosen from the European (PO, PSL, SLD, N., Zieloni) and Spring Coalition lists by Robert Biedroń. These MEPs represent the Socialists and Democrats and the Renew and Green groups. The remaining Polish Members of the European Parliament – representing PiS (belonging to the European Conservatives and Reformists – EKR in the EP), as well as the Civic Coalition and PSL (belonging to the European People’s Party – EPP in the EP) – were against the resolution.
– List of shame! Nine MEPs from Poland voted in favor of amending the EU treaties. Among them Thun, Spurek, Miller and Cimoszewicz
– It’s unbelievable! The ministers point out: “The adoption of the resolution was determined by the votes of the nine MEPs elected in Poland”
Change treaties? Arłukowicz: “A bit too fast and not at the moment”
KO MP Bartosz Arłukowicz and MEP Róża Thun – who joined Poland 2050 in 2021 – were asked on TVN24 on Saturday evening about the proposed changes to the EU treaties and the adopted resolution.
Arłukowicz emphasized during the conversation that MEPs representing KO voted against the resolution.
First of all, today is not a good time, both in Poland and in Europe, to amend treaties
– he argued.
We have a very bad (…) global security situation. What is happening today in Ukraine, in Israel, in the Gaza Strip – this is the first argument
– he justified. Secondly, he emphasized, the issue is “so important that there needs to be a good discussion on this subject in Poland, and we are transforming the government”, “the moment when a team that threatens the European Union leaves and uses this argument to scare the Poles again and another team will come, very pro-European, pro-Community.”
I think it’s a little too soon and not at this point
– noted Arłukowicz. At the same time, he emphasized that he was a “strong supporter of Europe (…) with areas for common action, such as health care.”
This is how Rose Thun translates!
In turn, Róża Thun (Poland 2050), when asked why she voted for the resolution, replied: “because we need exactly what the MP said, for example a common health policy.” Thun noted that “basically every moment is always bad for several important decisions.”
But here we only made this decision so that governments could look at this document and consider what changes we need in the EU. Thanks to the “yes” vote, this debate can finally begin
– she said.
It would be disastrous – and fortunate that there were some votes that tipped the balance towards ‘yes’ – if the votes of Poland, in whom we now really have great hope, were to block the start of this debate.
– she said.
According to the MEP, “for fear of anti-European, populist, terrible circles, we cannot retreat and refuse to let the whole of Europe move a step further.”
This step is small, this step says: let’s talk about this seriously
– she added.
She voted against the party’s recommendations. She will not be punished
A few days ago, the Vice President of Poland 2050, Joanna Mucha, said on Radio Zet that the formation had recommended Thun to vote against the resolution.
But we are aware that our parliamentarians have a free mandate and can vote as they think is in the best interests of Poland.
– Mucha then said.

Also on Thursday, the leader of Poland 2050, President of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia, pointed out that the MEP’s vote in favor of the EP resolution on amending EU treaties was her decision. Hołownia noted that he had a different opinion on this matter.
I don’t think we should punish ourselves for our beliefs in a group like ours
– the politician emphasized at the same time.

The main proposed changes include abandoning the principle of unanimity in EU Council voting in 65 areas and transferring powers from Member State level to EU level, including: through two new exclusive EU to create powers – in the areas of environmental protection and biodiversity (Article 3 TFEU) – and by significantly expanding shared powers (Article 4), which would cover seven new areas: foreign and security policy, border protection, public health, civil defence, industry and education.
