If nine Polish MEPs voted against the European Parliament resolution, the idea of amending the EU treaties would collapse and this farce would come to an end – according to the Confederation MPs. According to them, changing the treaties would lead to Poland being deprived of part of its independence.
In a resolution adopted in Strasbourg on Wednesday, the European Parliament supported amending the EU treaties. During the vote, 291 Members of the European Parliament were in favour, 274 against and 44 abstained.
Polish MEPs supporting the resolution included nine people – Róża Thun, Marek Balt, Marek Belka, Robert Biedroń, Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz, Łukasz Kohut, Bogusław Liberadzki, Leszek Miller and Sylwia Spurek – who served in the EP in 2019 were chosen from the European (PO, PSL, SLD, N., Zieloni) and Spring Coalition lists by Robert Biedroń. These MEPs represent the Socialists and Democrats and the Renew and Green groups. The remaining Polish Members of the European Parliament – representing PiS (belonging to the European Conservatives and Reformists – EKR in the EP), as well as the Civic Coalition and PSL (belonging to the European People’s Party – EPP in the EP) – were against the resolution.
As Michał Wawer (Confederation) stated at a conference in the Sejm: if nine Polish MEPs had voted against the resolution instead of in favor, “the amendment of the EU treaties would have failed yesterday and this farce would have ended .”
He emphasized that the vote on the resolution in the EP was the first step in the procedure for amending the EU treaties.
It is entirely possible that these EU treaties will collapse along the way, during this procedure, just as the idea of a European constitution once collapsed, but the fact voted on yesterday will probably be used to make some changes.
– said Wawer.
Wawer: We call on the government to oppose changing EU treaties
He stated that the Confederation would “remind at every step that this procedure is ongoing.”
We call on the government, every Polish government, to oppose changing the EU treaties at every opportunity, and to veto this treaty change when such a procedural window opens. And we would like to remind you that the ratification of any legal act transferring the powers of the Polish state to an international organization is a ratification that must take place in the Polish Sejm with a two-thirds majority of votes. And we must keep this in mind, especially as Mateusz Morawiecki, who routinely forgot this principle, ends his term. During his rule, he transferred powers to the EU several times, forgetting that this requires ratification by a two-thirds majority of votes in the Sejm. We intend to hold Prime Minister Morawiecki and any other Prime Minister who would commit the same crime in the future to account
– said Wawer.
MP Roman Fritz (Confederation) stated that changing EU treaties will lead to “taking away parts of our Polish independence”.
Our Members of the European Parliament, traitors, have given these pieces of independence to the authorities in Brussels for almost nothing. We continued to point out all these threats at the time of Poland’s accession to the EU. We wanted to join the EU as an economic community, not as a superstate controlled in an absolutely centralist way
– Fritz noted.
The report on the amendment of the treaties, adopted by the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, will be presented to the Council of Ministers for European Affairs on December 12.
According to the Spanish Presidency, there is sufficient majority in the EU Council to transmit the document to the European Council (leaders), which, by a simple majority, can convene the Convention provided for in the EU Treaty.
In the next stage, the President of the European Council will convene an Intergovernmental Conference (representatives of the governments of the Member States) to adopt changes to the EU treaties. In the next step, the agreed treaty would be ratified by the Member States.
