In response to the crackdown on Russian-language media in Moldova, Russia banned 11 MPs from the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), which controls the government, from entering the country. On Monday, a message was published on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry stating that Russia is taking retaliatory measures regarding the persecution of Russian-language media in Moldova. On November 20, Lilian Darius, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Moldova to the Russian Federation, was summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It was noted that “a strong protest has been expressed to the Moldovan side in connection with the ongoing politically motivated persecution of Russian-language media in Moldova, expressed, among other things, by blocking access to websites.”
Darius reportedthat, as an asymmetric measure, some officials of the Republic of Moldova were denied entry to the Russian Federation.
This year, the Emergency Situations Commission of the Moldovan Government suspended the licenses of 12 Moldovan television channels, banned the broadcast of Russian television and blocked access to dozens of information portals. The head of the information and security service, Alexander Mustyatsa, declared that these media pose a threat to the information security of the republic and are an additional source of instability in Ukraine, NATO and the European Union.
